We return to the site of our triumphal weekend of last March. The fifth annual gathering will take place Saturday and Sunday the 21st and 22nd of March, 2009. Again, a select group of songwriters will gather at Pfieffer Big Sur Lodge on the California Coast for a two day songwriting workshop.
While our significant others (kids are welcome too) hike the scenic trails or fish or horseback ride, those of us dedicated to improving our songwriting will work from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday with an hour break for lunch. From 7:00 to 10:00 PM both nights we'll open up the conference center to everybody and we'll all get to perform for the whole group. Attendance for the evenings isn't mandatory in case you'd rather take a romantic walk on the beach. There was a full moon for our last visit, and it was very beautiful. We must limit the workshop to just twenty-five people to make sure that everybody gets to share several songs with the group. We will do some teaching but I've found that the best use of the time we have together is to listen to each other's songs and discuss the issues that are common to all of us. I find that one round of songs will bring up just about all of the relevant issues, and it's helpful to see how people have found different solutions to some of the same problems. The fee for attending the workshop and all activities connected
with it is $125. I ask that those who wish to reserve a place send me a non-refundable
deposit of $25.
We'll need to have the remaining $100 by March 1st to make
sure that those on the waiting list have a chance to make plans to attend
if anyone drops out. Please make your check payable to Compass Rose
Music and send it to the address below. You may wish to order my book, Songwriting and the Creative Process, if you don't already have it. You can order it from our online store here.
Big Sur is a wonderful place to visit. There are many types of accommodations in the area. There are several campgrounds, camping cabins and motels in
the Big Sur canyon, and a larger number of reasonably priced motels in Carmel and Monterey just forty-five minutes to an hour away by the most spectacular highway in the US.
If you do wish to stay at the
Pfeiffer Big Sur Lodge, contact them by phone at: (800) 424-4787, or through
their website at www.Bigsurlodge.com
In addition to the campgrounds, the lodge offers a number of small cabins, some with hot tubs and fireplaces, some even with kitchens. Some cabins are available for groups of four to six. There are many other places listed by the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce at: www.bigsurcalifornia.org/lodging.html We are preparing a more detailed description of the sessions which will be posted here as we get closer to the workshop. We plan to have a keyboard and CD and cassette
player on hand, and extra guitars if you are flying and don't want to bring one.
We encourage serious songwriters from all skill levels. I
feel we have a lot to share with each other, and I know that spending
time together will have many benefits only one of which is improving
our songwriting. Please let me know if you have any other questions, I'll
look forward to discussing the project with you.
